Leanne says she wants our boys to go to college here and we can just live in a sailboat next to them. But for now, we’ll have to say goodbye to St. Mary’s College to head for the collegially-named Cambridge. It was a cool morning with calm conditions for sailing. We left at first light and, again, were kidless for the first 4 hours of the trip. We had good wind, so we sailed for the better part of the day.
We stopped in LeCompte Bay, just a few miles from Cambridge, the first night. It was a serene anchorage – the neighboring grasslands and woodlands were filled with bald eagles, cranes, herons, and terns. The boys briefly contemplated swimming until they saw the thousands of tiny jellyfish surrounding the boat.
Saturday, October 4: Cambridge
| Start: LeCompte Bay, Cambridge, MD (anchor) | Miles: 5.6 |
| End: Cambridge Marina, MD (dock) | Time: 1hr40min |
| Weather: Sunny, breezy, and mild | Waves: 0 ft |
We made the 6-mile trek to Cambridge and took a slip at the municipal docks. We connected to shorepower after 5 days at anchor, a new record for us. After homeschool, we walked through the cute downtown area to a town park up the river. We went to the RAR Brewing tap room and burger joint, sampling their wares before heading back to the boat. The next day I convinced the family that we’d walk all the way across town to see a Harriet Tubman monument (she was from the outlying area), play at a park, get lunch at Chick-Fil-A, and get groceries. The kids’ patience waned at the monument, the park was lamer than expected, and, on the walk, we remembered Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sundays. Dad is not popular today. We played some soccer in the grass when we got back, but some days just miss the mark.

Next stop: Annapolis and its famous boat show. https://svblueheeler.com/visitors-in-annapolis/
