| Weather: Cool and calm | Waves: 0-1 ft |
We left the USS Yorktown anchorage in Charleston and headed south for what we expected to be a pretty calm motor sail. This weekend’s blow should be behind us, and the seas should be settled (or settling). We left at 08:45, so were able to sleep in. On the channel out, the boys awoken in the v-berth by the falling and slapping of our bow going over/down/through a 5-ft wave from a massive container ship. As we left the channel, we saw a very nice Beneteau Oceanis 50 sailboat being carried by a salvage crew’s crane. We had heard of this unfortunate mayday the day before when someone had run aground on the jetty protecting the Charleston inlet. That was a nice boat with a lot of damage.
Out in the open ocean, it was a boring day. I messed with sails, trying to keep the engine off for as long as possible, but we gave that up when we were averaging < 4 kts. We motor-sailed through 2 ft rolling waves that turned into flat glass by the afternoon. The boys entertained themselves with Lego, reading Percy Jackson novels, and ultimately video games until well past my bedtime. Leanne took 18:00 to 00:00, I took 00:00 to 05:00, and she brought us our ocean inlet by 09:00.
We’re excited to be in Brunswick, where we’ll spend the next 2 weeks (at least). Firstly, this is where we bought our boat, and where I started sailing on it! We also have friends on SV Atlas docked next to us, who have boys to play with. While we’re hear, we’ll drive to Orlando for theme parks, and my mother-in-law will visit us before Thanksgiving. We’re also getting work done (painting the hull, instrument replacement, engine seal replacement, and welding job to fix a crack in our solar arch). Should be a lot of time here to get familiar with the marina.
